The Bhumibol Bridge (also "Mega Bridge " , Thai สะพาน ภูมิพล , RTGS Saphan Phumiphon ) is a bridge over the Mae Nam Chao Phraya ( Chao Phraya River ) in Thailand . It combines Phra Pradaeng District ( province of Samut Prakan ) to the south of the capital Bangkok .

technology

Mega Bridge over the Chao Phraya

It is a double bridge that overcomes the Chao Phraya, which forms a loop at this point, twice - including the headland in between.

The two partial bridges are designed as cable-stayed bridges . The northern Bhumibol-1 bridge is 702 meters long, the southern Bhumibol-2 bridge is 582 meters long. Each of the two partial bridges is held by two pylons in the shape of a diamond . At the Bhumibol-1 they are 173 meters high and at the Bhumibol-2 bridge they are 164 meters high. There are three lanes in each direction.

In the middle between the two bridges there is a motorway triangle that connects to the Saphan Phumiphon. The area below the motorway junction was designed as a recreation park

function

The double bridge is part of the 13-kilometer Industrial Ring Road that connects Rama III Street in Bangkok's Yan Nawa district with the southern part of the Bangkok Outer Ring Highway. The most important industrial areas of Bangkok are located in this area.

Opening / name

Although it was opened to traffic on September 20, 2006, it was only officially opened on December 5, 2006, the 79th birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej . At first it was simply called "Industrieringstrasse Bridge" and was widely known as the "Mega Bridge". At times it was assumed that it could be named after Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti , the then 1-year-old grandson of the king. However, on October 21, 2009 it was officially announced that it would bear the name of the king himself.

The name of the northern section that connects Bangkok with the Samut Prakan Province has since been "Bhumibol-1 Bridge" and that of the southern section, which connects the city of Phra Pradaeng with the Samrong Tai subdistrict, "Bhumibol-2 Bridge".
