Amphoe Phra Pradaeng ( Thai อำเภอ พระประแดง , pronunciation: ʔāmpʰɤ̄ː pʰráʔ prā.dɛ̄ːŋ ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the province of Samut Prakan . The province of Samut Prakan is located in the central region of Thailand on the southeastern outskirts of Bangkok .
geography
Samut Prakan belongs to the Bangkok metropolitan area , the transition between the two cities is fluid. Amphoe Phra Pradaeng lies in a large loop of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya (Chao Phraya River) .
The neighboring districts are (clockwise from the west): the Khet (districts of Bangkok) Thung Khru , Rat Burana , Yan Nawa , Khlong Toei , Phra Khanong and Bang Na , and the Mueang Samut Prakan and Phra Samut Chedi amphoe of Samut Prakan Province .
The northern part of the Phra Pradaeng district is occupied by the Bang Kachao ( บาง กะ เจ้า ) peninsula . It is surrounded on three sides by the Chao Phraya, which forms a loop here and at the same time marks the border with Bangkok. Unlike the neighboring capital and large parts of Samut Prakan province, it is neither urbanized nor industrialized. There is dense vegetation, only very small, hardly used roads and village-like settlement. It is therefore considered to be the “green lung” of Bangkok.
The Bhumibol Bridge (also known as the Mega Bridge) connects Amphoe Phra Pradaeng with the south of Bangkok.
history
Phra Pradaeng is the center of the area south of Bangkok near the mouth of the Chao Phraya. Originally it was called Nakhon Khuean Khan ( นครเขื่อนขันธ์ ), was popularly known as Pak Lat and its inhabitants were predominantly from the Mon population group . Between 1814 and 1815, King Phra Phutthaloetla Naphalai ( Rama II ) had the Pom Phlaeng Faifa ( ป้อม แผลง ไฟฟ้า ) fort built in a bend in the river under the supervision of the Uparat (viceroy). Between 1820 and the 1830s, the fort was reinforced and, when completed, contained about 200 cannons. Today the fort is located in a small park for tourists. On Friday, June 2nd, 1815, the city shrine ( Lak Mueang ) was inaugurated in a ceremony.
In 1819 the new municipal administration of Amphoe Mueang Samut Prakan (or Paknam) was established. Due to the administrative reform of Prince Damrong Rajanubhab , Phra Pradaeng lost its provincial status and became a district of Samut Prakan Province. In the first half of the 19th century , Phra Pradaeng was a market town that supplied Bangkok with firewood. A small canal shortened the 16 km long loop of the Chao Phraya, but salt water from the Gulf of Siam penetrated through it , so that it was closed with a brick wall.
