Bicinchoninsäure ( English b icin c honinic a cid, BCA ) is the common name for the chemical compound 2,2'-biquinoline-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid. It is a heterocyclic compound that consists of two quinoline molecules linked in the 2-position, each of which has carboxy groups in the 4-position. It is therefore a dicarboxylic acid .

properties

BCA reacts like biquinoline with monovalent copper ions to form a complex compound with a purple color.

Structural formula of the purple Cu + -bicinchoninic acid complex.

use

The BCA test is used in biochemistry for the quantitative, photometric or colorimetric determination of proteins (0.5 μg / mL - 1.5 mg / mL). Bivalent copper ions react quantitatively with protein to form monovalent copper ions. Together with bicinchoninic acid, these give a violet dye, the absorption of which can be evaluated photometrically at a wavelength of 562 nm.
