Bickleigh Castle

Bickleigh Castle is a fortified manor house on the banks of the Exe in the village of Bickleigh in the English county of Devon .

The formerly much larger ensemble now consists of a group of buildings from different periods. The Norman moth from the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century was torn down again in the middle of the 12th century. During this time, a small stone chapel was built in the courtyard. In the 15th century, the Courtney family built a mansion on the site and incorporated some of the older buildings. The Carew family lived there for over 200 years.

During the English Civil War , Charles I's wife , Queen Henrietta Maria , spent some time at the castle until word came that Fairfax's parliamentary troops were approaching. From there she fled to France . Most of the crenellated buildings were then destroyed by parliamentary troops. The demolition of Bickleigh Castle was in response to the Carew family's friendly ties with the royal family and the use of the castle as a fortress. A portrait of Henrietta Maria can still be found in the castle today.

After the Stuart restoration , a typical Devonian farmhouse, a clay corrugated building with a thatched roof , was added.

The buildings later fell into disrepair and were used as a barn and farm until they were renovated at the beginning of the 20th century. The 14th century Norman chapel and gatehouse still exist today.

chapel

The chapel at Bickleigh Castle which is said to be Anglo-Saxon

The Norman chapel was built in the 11th century and was given a "wagon roof" that was common at the time in the 15th century. It is considered to be the oldest completely preserved building in Devon. It is thought that the chapel was built on the foundations of an Anglo-Saxon building from the 6th century. It was extensively renovated at the beginning of the 20th century.
