The River Exe is a river in south-west England .

The river has its source on the eastern flank of the Exmoor Forest in Exmoor National Park in northwest Somerset . The source is only 9 kilometers from the south coast of the Bristol Channel , but the River Exe flows southeast before turning south at Exton. Its mouth is located at Exmouth on the south coast of the county of Devon on the English Channel and is designed as an estuary about ten kilometers long . This estuary is located in a ria , a river valley that was once deeply cut into the terrain and which was flooded by the sea in the post-ice age .
Numerous villages and towns along the river are named after the River Exe, including Exford, Up Exe, Nether Exe, Exwick, Exton, Exebridge, Exminster , Exeter, and Exmouth. Tiverton is another important town .
