The beer boat in Utrecht is the world's first purely electrically powered cargo ship. It has been running in the city center of Utrecht since January 19, 2010 and supplies the catering establishments .

background

After the positive experiences that had been made with the first conventionally powered beer boat since 1996, the Utrecht Port Authority decided to build an environmentally friendly second boat. By supplying the catering trade from the waterside, the inner-city freight traffic is noticeably reduced and delivery times are shortened.

Data and technology

The boat is 18.8 m long, 4.26 m wide and has a maximum draft of 1.10 m. It can load 40 roll containers .

It is driven by a 55 kW synchronous motor , which draws its energy from a 480 volt battery pack with a capacity of 86.4 kWh. This is only charged with green electricity and lasts for around nine hours of driving. This saves 16.5 tons of CO 2 every year. However, a maximum of 10 percent of the installed power is required for the trip in the canals , full power is only required when maneuvering, whereby the 15 kW bow thruster is also used.

The hydraulic loading crane on board has a range of 14 meters. An 83 kW diesel generator is also installed for emergencies .

The boat was built by the Bocxe shipyard and the Koeleman company based on a design by Vuyk Engineering Rotterdam BV . The construction was partly financed by the Air Quality Action Plan and supported by the EC . A second identical boat will be used in Amsterdam from summer 2010 . More boats are planned in Utrecht to relieve inner-city traffic. In 2009 the companies involved were awarded the Stedelijke Distributie Award.
