Bigace is published in the first version in 2004 open-source - Web Content Management System (CMS). It is based on the server-side scripting language PHP and the database system MySQL . BIGACE is no longer being developed. The primary target groups were private websites, appearances by associations and appearances by small and medium-sized companies.

BIGACE can be easily adapted to special situations with plug-ins (so-called extensions , small extension programs). BIGACE is controlled on a web server with a web browser . No additional software is required from the editor for operation, but the web browser must support JavaScript. BIGACE offers different application possibilities, which are divided into the areas of design, application and content.
The administration (the so-called backend ) is the part of BIGACE that is visible in the web browser and in which content is created and edited. A rich text editor, in which content can be formatted like in a word processor (e.g. Word ), allows users without HTML knowledge to do editorial work.
Search engine friendliness
If you want to create websites that are particularly suitable for the crawling technology of today's modern search engines, BIGACE offers a few setting options. In addition to maintaining meta information for keywords and description tags, which can be specified separately for each page, it is also possible to integrate your own meta information. Page titles can be defined for each page, whereby the title of the project as well as the page name and page title are available as separate variables in the template. The rewriting of the URLs generated by the system in a search engine-friendly format is solved by URL rewriting . In addition, the system provides barrier-free and standards-compliant code; a table-free design is supplied with the standard installation.
In addition, additional points can be implemented by installing an extension:

- A Google Analytics identifier can be set using a configuration entry. This means that the required code for this tool is automatically output to the correct place in the source text of the page.

- A sitemap can be generated automatically, for example for submission to major search engines.

- Pages can be explicitly excluded from indexing. The required HTML code is automatically generated in the right place.
Hosting
Since BIGACE is server-based software, the dependency on PHP 5.1 and MySQL 4.1 is shown as a requirement. In addition, a web server is required, with Apache , Microsoft IIS and Lighttpd being officially supported. On the PHP side, some extensions such as SimpleXML are required, which are available in every PHP standard installation and whose existence is checked during the installation of BIGACE.
The installation can be done manually by adding the required program packages via z. B. can be copied to the server using FTP or SSH and unpacked there.
Since May 2009 BIGACE has been certified as SaaS software by Parallels, the manufacturer of the Plesk administration interface , with gold and thus fully implements version 1.1 of the APS standard. For the end user, this means that he can install BIGACE with just one click if he manages his website with APS-certified software such as Plesk or SysCP .
There are several web hosts who have specialized in the use of BIGACE and thus guarantee that their offers are fully compatible with the requirements of the system.
License
BIGACE is published under the GPL in version 2, the source code is therefore freely accessible, commercially usable and expandable for everyone.
criticism
The selection of extensions is smaller than with comparable systems. In October 2009 around 50 extensions were available, while there are several hundred or even several thousand extensions for Joomla , Drupal or TYPO3 . However, BIGACE already offers functions in the core system (password-protected areas with member registration, password recovery, multi-client capability and much more) that are only available with other CMS by means of an extension.
The core system of BIGACE is currently being created by just one developer, which can be critical for sustainable further development. However, several developers are available for developing extensions. In addition, several web agencies offer professional BIGACE services, for which, however, no certifications exist as with systems like Typo3 .
