The Big Band Dachau is a big band from Dachau in Upper Bavaria, founded in 2010 . The band plays a mixture of big band jazz with techno and hip-hop rhythms and stands out from comparable ensembles in particular through group improvisations led by the band leader . In addition, it stands out for its extravagant stage outfits and decorations with gold and glitter elements.

history

The Big Band Dachau was founded in 2010 by Jörg Hartl as a swing and jazz ensemble for musical training at the Dachau Boys' Chapel. Initially she played classic swing and big band jazz, but from 2013 it was increasingly enriched with elements of contemporary club and dance music under the motto big band meets disco .

The big band initially appeared under the name Big Band of the Dachau Boys' Chapel ; In 2013, when the first CD Bigband Dachau was released, it was renamed Bigband Dachau.

In 2013 and 2015 the big band Dachau took part in the state competition Jugend jazzt Bayern for jazz orchestra, in which they won a performance at the Bavarian Jazzweekend 2014 in Regensburg in 2013. In 2015 it was awarded the top grade “with outstanding success”.

In 2015 the band went on a u. a. tour through Austria and Italy supported by the Goethe-Institut , where she appeared in the German Pavilion at the World Exhibition Expo 2015 in Milan.

In April 2016 Jörg Hartl gave up the leadership of the band; Since then it has been directed by the Augsburg jazz pianist Thomas Jahn alias Tom Tornado, who had previously supported Hartl in the direction of the orchestra.

In 2016 the second CD, The Damned Beat, was released on Artmode Records. The CD was on the show Monday demonstration in Zündfunk presented to BR 2 and became monthly winners in August 2016. In the same year the band for the first time for was Tassilo Culture Prize of the Sueddeutsche Zeitung nominated.

In 2017 the big band Dachau played at the Montreux Jazz Festival . In a two-part episode of the Jazztime program on BR-Klassik on the subject of jazz and techno , she was presented as one of four bands that combine these styles.

In 2018 the band was nominated again for the Tassilo Culture Prize of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and was awarded one of the three main prizes. At the invitation of the Dachau District Office, she traveled with a Dachau delegation to Oświęcim (Poland) and performed there at the Tauron Life Festival with the Rebel Babel project by the Polish rapper LUC .
