The Bijilo Forest Park with about 51.3 hectares is a forest area in the West African state of Gambia . Today it serves as a nature reserve , the area is no longer used for forestry.

topography

Located directly on the Atlantic Ocean , 1.2 kilometers north of the city of Bijilo and 2.2 kilometers south of Kololi in the West Coast Region , Kombo North district . Until 2017, the entrance to the park was on the north side , facing the Kololi Beach tourist center or, more commonly known as the Senegambia Area . The entrance has been on the Senegambia Highway ( location ) since 2017 . The park, which can only be entered on foot, has four different, color-coded paths with a total length of approximately 4.5 kilometers. Admission is 150 Dalasi (2019: just under 3 euros).

history

The area was established in 1950 and was initially intended to be used for forestry purposes. It showed a lack of profitability because the area of ​​the forest is too small. The Gambian-German Forestry Project (GGFP), which is a collaboration with the German Forest Service (DFS) and the Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) with the Gambian responsible parties , successfully took numerous forests under, including the Bijilo Forest Park in 1982 Protection provided. The park has been accessible to visitors since 1991 and offers a tour on a signposted educational forest trail.

In 2017 there was major clearing work in the north and part of the park was developed as building land.

Bijilo is considered the last natural west Atlantic coastal forest with a variety of plant species. Among other things, Ethiopian palmyra palms ( Borassus aethiopum ) can be found here, they are the last larger populations in Gambia. Baobabs (German: Affenbrotbaum), Cinnamon Apple Annones ( Annona squamosa ), Kapok trees ( Ceiba pentandra ), figs ( Ficus vogelii, F. gnaphalocarpa, F. exasperata, F. capensis ) and huge oil palms ( Elaeis guineensis ) can be found here.

fauna

In addition to numerous bird species, the western green monkey ( Chlorocebus sabaeus ), the Temminck colobus monkey ( Piliocolobus temminckii ) and the hussar monkey ( Erythrocebus patas ) as well as numerous reptile species live here .
