Bilal Xhaferri

Bilal Xhaferr Xhaferri (born November 2, 1935 in Ninat near Konispol in the region of Çamëria , † October 14, 1986 in Chicago , Illinois , United States ) was an Albanian writer and publicist.

Life

In Albania

Bilal Xhaferri was born in 1935 in the southern Albanian village of Ninat. In 1945 his father was shot as an anti-communist nationalist, his mother had died in 1943. In 1952 Xhaferri lived and worked in Saranda as a simple laborer and postman. It was not until 1955 that Xhaferri completed the seven-year elementary school in the village of Sukth near Durrës . From 1962 to 1963 he published the first short stories and poems in newspapers and magazines such as Zëri i Rinisë , Drita , Nëntori and Ylli . In 1966 a volume with stories Njerëz të rinj, tokë e lashtë was published, in 1967 another volume with stories with Lirishta e kuqe . The distribution of this book was stopped by the communist censorship .

In 1967, Xhaferri wrote the novel Krastakraus , which was published after his death in 1993. In 1968 he wrote the scenario for the film Era shtyn mjegullat . In 1968 his publication rights were withdrawn. The publication of his works was still prevented by the censorship. Because of his criticism of the novel Dasma (Eng: The Wedding ) by Ismail Kadare , he was expelled from the writers and artists association and then banished to the village of Hamallaj near Durrës. On August 30, 1969, Xhaferri fled Albania to Greece and later to the United States. The secret service ( Sigurimi i Shtetit) kept a file on him.

In the United States

From 1970 he lived in Boston in the United States and worked from 1970 to 1972 for the newspaper Dielli (Eng .: The Sun). In 1972 he sent the Rilindja publishing company in Pristina to publish the novel Ra Berati ( Eng .: Berat fell). In October 1974 he founded the magazine Krahu i shqiponjës (German: Eagle's Wing) in Chicago, USA, which is published in Albanian and English as the organ of the Tschamischen League.

From 1974 to 1986 he directed and published the magazine Krahu i shqiponjës as a stage for free expression. It often dealt with the problems of the Czech question. There were also issues such as resistance to the communist dictatorship and the question of Kosovo. It was a democratic magazine for young writers too. The magazine appeared in 39 issues in both languages, both English and Albanian. In 1975 the magazine Krahu i shqiponjës published fragments of the novel Trotuare të kundërta (German: opposing sidewalks). In 1977 a fragment of the novel Hëna e kantjereve (Eng .: The moon of the construction sites) was published by Krahu i shqiponjës . In 1978 Xhaferri was injured in an attack by unknown perpetrators and in 1981 the editorial office of the magazine Krahu i shqiponjës was set on fire. Manuscripts of literary works, studies, documents, political notes, photographs, images, translations and correspondence were lost.

In 1986, Xhaferri fell ill and had a tumor operated on. On October 14, 1986, he died in hospital in Chicago for unknown reasons ; a murder cannot be ruled out. In 1995 his body was sold to Albania.

Honors

On May 3, 1995, the President of the Republic of Albania awarded him posthumously the medal Martir i demokracisë with decree NR 1089 and the accompanying words "For the affection as a dissident police officer and politician in the fight against communism and dictatorship, for his deeply national and democratic inspirations" ( German: Martyrs of Democracy).

The writer Shefki Hysa , the head of the cultural society Bilal Xhaferri , suggested the return of his bones to his fatherland and organized the repatriation in cooperation with the Albanian government on May 6, 1995. His grave is now in his birthplace in Saranda County .
