The Education Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired Krakow is the central school center for the blind and visually impaired in southern Poland in the VIII Dębniki district in Krakow.

history

In 1948 the institute was founded in Cracow under the patronage of Włodzimierz Dolański, founder of the Polish Blind Union, and started operations with 15 students and 14 teachers, educators and administrative staff.

In 1985 Mieczyslaw Kozlowski took over the management and expanded the school from an elementary school to include a music school, a high school, a department for early learning, a counseling center for blind and visually impaired people and had pupils trained as piano tuners.

Structures

The education center includes early support for preschool children, a six-year elementary school , a three-year lower secondary school and a three-year advanced high school (grades 9–12) leading to higher education entrance qualifications . For those who do not intend to study, there is a technical college for sound engineers and piano tuners as well as a technical school for horticulture . Office technicians are trained in a vocational training branch. In addition, the education center also looks after integratively trained visually impaired people at regular schools. In addition, the facility provides rehabilitation measures and medical care for its students in the areas of pediatrics , ophthalmology , low-vision training, neurology , psychotherapy and physiotherapy .

Of the total of around 500 students at the facility in 2004, 280 lived in an attached boarding school.

Since 1991 there has been a partnership with the comparable central German institution, the Carl Strehl School of the German Study for the Blind in Marburg . The 11th grade students travel to the partner facility for one week each. The student exchange project is prepared in a foreign language and in the subjects of history, economics and politics.
