Hansjoachim Rosenthal

Hans-Joachim Rosenthal (born November 29, 1956 - March 11, 2013 in Berlin ) was a German criminal. He was convicted of murder on two counts in 1976 and 1988. The second process attracted a lot of attention because of the issue of genetic fingerprinting .

Life

On February 27, 1988, Rosenthal raped and murdered the 21-year-old bank clerk Claudia Mrosek in Silbersteinstrasse in Berlin-Neukölln .

This case found its way into criminal history because, for the first time in Germany, a murderer was found using DNA analysis (genetic fingerprint). Rosenthal's lawyer, Hans-Christian Ströbele , vehemently opposed the new procedure because he saw it as an encroachment on personal rights. After the test result, Rosenthal admitted his guilt in court, but stated that it had come about because he heard voices ordering him to act. The defense then pleaded incapacity for guilt because of a split personality . In the opinion of the public prosecutor , however, Rosenthal was fully criminally responsible.

Rosenthal, who was arrested in 1976 for the robbery and murder of the Spandau local owner Helene Baron, was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 1988 . Because of the danger one was additionally secured custody arranged. Rosenthal died of cancer in custody in March 2013.
