Bill Kauffman

Bill Kauffman (born November 15, 1959 in Batavia , New York ) is an American author and columnist .

Bill Kauffman grew up in his birthplace, Batavia, in northwest New York. After completing his studies at the University of Rochester , he worked for two and a half years in Washington, DC from 1981 onwards for the then US Senator of the Democratic Party for New York State, Daniel Patrick Moynihan . In 1985 Kauffman became editor of the libertarian magazine Reason , first in Santa Barbara, California, and from 1986 in Washington, DC as a correspondent. In 1988, Kauffman resigned from his permanent position at Reason and returned to Batavia with his Los Angeles- born wife as an initially "one-year experiment". Since then he has been living there as a freelance writer or in nearby Elba .

While Kauffman's first book, Every Man a King , published in 1989 , is a novel , his books and columns published since then are non-fiction . The topics considered include political considerations on regionalism , libertarianism , conservatism , pacifism and isolationism as well as historical aspects, in particular regional history and the civil war . Kauffman has been or is a regular columnist for The American Conservative (since 2004), CounterPunch , The Nation , Reason (1985–1988; 2008, 2013) and the Wall Street Journal , among others .
