The film is set in a rural location in upstate New York in 1862 . The farmer Abner Beech lives in the north of the USA and rejects the American Civil War. That gives him the image of a copperhead . Many villagers enroll in the Union army and fight for it in various battles, while Abner stays at home, a behavior for which he is increasingly criticized. Even his son Jeff joins the army.
