Bill McCreary (referee)

William "Bill" McCreary (born November 17, 1955 in Guelph , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey referee in the National Hockey League . He has directed three finals at the Olympic Games and 14 at the Stanley Cup so far .

Bill McCreary began his career in 1982 in the Central Hockey League and the American Hockey League . For his first NHL assignment he was called on November 3, 1984 in a game of the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Washington Capitals . In the play-offs he has been used since the 1986/87 season . In February 2008 he whistled his 1,500th NHL game. By 2007 he was part of the referee team in the final of the Stanley Cup 13 times in a row . After not being considered in 2008, he was nominated again in 2009.

At international level, he led games in the Canada Cup in 1991 and in the Spengler Cup in 1995. In 1998 he was nominated for the first time for the Winter Olympics, where he whistled the final between the Czech Republic and Russia. At the 2002 Games , he was game director in the final between Canada and the USA. The new edition in Vancouver 2010 was also under his direction.

Bill McCreary retired after the 2009-10 season . In 2014 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame .
