Wilhelm Heinrich Nagel

Wilhelm Heinrich Nagel , also Bill Nagel (born November 7, 1888 in Munich ; † October 13, 1967 there ), was a German painter.

Life

Bill Nagel was born on November 7th, 1888 as the son of the owner of a stationery shop in Munich. At the age of 15 he traveled to North America, where he stayed until 1911. During these years he earned his living alternately as a cotton picker, entertainment pianist and circus artist or he moved around as a tramp .

In 1911 he returned to Germany at the age of 23. During the First World War he did military service. In the 1920s he began self-taught to paint.

From 1928, Nagel took part in the annual exhibitions in the Munich Glass Palace of the New Munich Artists 'Cooperative and Munich Artists' Cooperative. Friendly relationships developed with artist colleagues Adolf Büger , Willi Geiger and, in the 1950s, with the painter Karoline Wittmann .

In 1929, Nagel received a grant from the city of Munich (trip to Hungary). In 1930 he was awarded the Albrecht Dürer Prize of the city of Nuremberg. Between 1933 and 1945 he exhibited a few India ink drawings or watercolors with Munich suburban motifs a. a. in the Great German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich.

From 1948 until his death in 1967 he was a member of the Neue Gruppe and regularly participated in the annual major art exhibitions in Munich at the Haus der Kunst .
