Bill Paterno

Bill Paterno (born March 24,  1955 in Spring Lake, New Jersey ) is an American basketball coach and former player.

career

Paterno grew up as the oldest of eleven siblings in Spring Lake, New Jersey , and played basketball at the University of Notre Dame from 1973 to 1977 . The 1.96 meter tall winger played a total of 116 games for the "Fighting Irish" and scored an average of 9.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per encounter. His best university season was 1974/75, when Paterno posted averages of 13.3 points and 6.8 rebounds. In his last two years he was the captain of the university team. In 1977 the Kansas City Kings (predecessor of the Sacramento Kings ) secured the rights to Paterno in the third selection round in a total of 45th place in the draft process of the NBA . Paterno did not play an NBA game. In the 1977/78 season Paterno was under contract with the Italian club Hurlingham Trieste. He also played as a professional in France. In 1997 he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in his home region of Jersey Shore for his achievements as a basketball player.

As a coach he was in charge of the German Bundesliga club TuS Herten in the 1990/91 season and was then employed as a coach for the Italian club Montibasket Montichiari until 1997. Until 1992 Paterno was assistant coach of the local men's team in the second Italian league as well as youth coach, in 1992 he took over the head coaching position of the Montichiari men, which he occupied until 1996 and then was again assistant coach and coach in the junior division for a year. Between 1997 and 1999 Paterno was the coach of the Austrian Bundesliga club Swans Gmunden and led the teams into the quarter-finals of the championship round in both years.

Paterno returned to the United States for several years, from 2008 to 2010 he headed a basketball youth project in Italy and was introduced as the new coach of the Austrian second division BBU Salzburg in January 2010. In May 2010 he took over the coaching position at the Luxembourg second division club US Heffingen and led the team to promotion. He stayed in office until October 2011.

For the 2012/13 season Paterno, whose wife comes from Recklinghausen  , took up the position of coach at Citybasket Recklinghausen  (promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga ProB ). End of January 2013, came to separate, Paterno was but continued to work for the club at youth level as a coach, he was also the 2013/14 assistant coach of the syndicate metropolitan Baskets Ruhr in the junior basketball league (NBBL), and had 2017 / 18 in the team with Predrag Radanovic as coaching double head, the management of the Metropol Baskets in the NBBL.
