Bill Self (born December 27, 1962 in Okmulgee , Oklahoma ) is an American basketball coach . He has coached the University of Kansas team , the Kansas Jayhawks , since 2003 . With her he won the 2008 NCAA Division I Basketball Championship . Prior to that, he worked for three years as a trainer at the University of Illinois and as a trainer at Oral Roberts University (1993–1998) and the University of Tulsa (1998–2000). Between 2000 and 2003 and 2009 he was one of the candidates for the coach of the year award . His previous college coaching record is 376-145. He is one of only four coaches who have put teams from three different colleges into the top eight, the Elite Eight , of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I in basketball.

Self was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach in 2017 .
