The Billerbeck is a 2.5 kilometer long stream in the Lüneburg district .

course

The Billerbeck is created as a ditch on the edge of a rain retention basin in the northeast of Embsen . It runs from here in an easterly direction. The brook runs piped under the Embsen district of Wagenhorst. At the edge of the Melbeck district of Bahnhof, it flows through a sewage pond of a former fertilizer plant. Below the clarification pond, the brook now runs in a south-easterly direction, initially again piped and crosses under the Lüneburg – Soltau railway line . South of Melbeck-Bahnhof it changes its course again in an easterly direction and between Melbeck and Melbeck-Bahnhof in a southeast direction. To the east of Melbeck, the brook crosses under Kreisstraße 33 and then flows into the Barnstedt- Melbeck brook on the western edge of Melbeck .

The Billerbeck has been straightened for almost its entire length. Especially above the clarification pond at Melbeck-Bahnhof it only carries water from time to time. Here it runs mainly on the edge of arable land with only a narrow strip of water and is unshaded except for individual trees on the banks. From Melbeck train station to the crossing through Kreisstraße 33, the stream runs through wooded areas or on the edge of this and after crossing the Kreisstraße through grasslands . The section of the stream lies below Melbeck train station in the “Barnstedt-Melbecker Bach” nature reserve .

The Billerbeck has no tributaries worth mentioning, but it does absorb the water from some of the ditches that flow towards it.

Renaturation

The lower course of the Billerbeck directly west of Melbeck was renatured in 2011 . For this purpose, the course of the stream was relocated and redesigned to a length of around 200 meters. For renaturation, an area previously used as a field was abandoned and converted into a biotope . A new watercourse was laid through this area in a floodplain that was six to twelve meters wide . Before that, the stream ran south here at the edge of the field. The redesign doubled the length of the Billerbeck, which now meanders in a south-easterly direction , in this section. It can develop dynamically on around four hectares. Alder, ash, elm and hornbeam were planted to promote the floodplain. Species-rich grassland that is only used extensively was able to develop in adjacent areas. To the north of the stream, a still water was created. In addition to the redesign of the watercourse, the section of the stream lying directly above the surface has also been upgraded with several loops. In places, gravel was brought into the stream as a bed substrate.

The project to renaturalize the watercourse and the construction of the biotope cost around 55,000 euros. Of this, 36,000 euros came from EAFRD funds and 12,000 euros from the state of Lower Saxony. At the Lower Saxony water competition “Bach im Fluss”, the district of Lüneburg was awarded the “Bachperle 2012” prize on October 8, 2012 for the renaturation of the Billerbeck.
