The shopping center was completed and opened in 1977. The client was Butler & Burrs Hamburg GbR. In January 1995 the once open shopping street - the "Billstedter Platz" - was roofed over and structurally and functionally merged with the existing shopping center.
The reason for the merging of the two different properties was that the integration gave the Billstedt district more quality and a contemporary variety of industries and architecture should benefit the cityscape, which, due to the previous mix of industries, the attractiveness and accessibility of the catchment area and the approach to foreigners Restricted visitors.
The Billstedt Center was modernized in January 1997 and reopened on September 4, 1997 with a broader branch mix. In the Billstedt-Center there are currently 110 specialty stores as well as department stores as well as service and catering establishments. In addition, there are some medical practices in the Billstedt Center (including dentists, general practitioners, ophthalmologists and practices for physiotherapy).
On May 29, 2015, the Karstadt department store chain closed its branch in the Billstedt Center. On the former area of Karstadt (the largest single area in the Billstedt Center), the Primark fashion house opened one after the other from December 2016 , followed by the Müller drugstore chain , the Cubus fashion house and ultimately the Woolworth retail chain .
Belonging to the Billstedt Center is the Centrum building opposite, in which the majority of medical practices and other smaller shops can be found. The branches of Commerzbank and Hamburger Sparkasse are also located in this building. Until January 2017 there was also a branch of Deutsche Bank in the Billstedt Center.
