Billy Miske

Billy Miske (born April 12, 1894 in St. Paul ; † January 1, 1924 ; born William Arthur Miske ) was an American boxer of German origin who fought for the heavyweight title against Jack Dempsey .

Career

Miske started boxing in the middleweight division in 1913. He had his heyday in the light heavyweight division when he beat Jack Dillon twice in 1917 , but was defeated by Battling Levinsky . He defeated Gunboat Smith twice in 1918. Against Dempsey he boxed twice in 1918, the first time a draw, the second time he lost on points. He knocked out Fireman Jim Flynn in the second round, losing to middleweight star Harry Greb in 1918 and 1919.

In the light heavyweight division he was never able to box for the World Cup, but the freshly baked heavyweight world champion Dempsey gave him a chance for the title and inflicted the only knockout defeat of his career in 1920.

He won and lost against Tommy Gibbons in 1922, he knocked out Fred Fulton in the first round. Seriously suffering from kidney disease, he knocked Bill Brennan out in 1923.

Shortly afterwards he died.

In 2010 Miske was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
