Veldenz Castle

The Burg Veldenz , even castle Nohfelden called, is situated on a mountain ridge in Nohfelden in the district of St. Wendel in the north saarland .

history

The Spornburg was first mentioned in a document in 1285. Its builder, Wilhelm Bossel II. Vom Stein, who came from Oberstein an der Nahe, had to grant the Count of Veldenz the right to open his castle in the document . After the von Stein family died out, the castle passed to the Counts of Veldenz .

In the middle of the 15th century, the dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken acquired the castle and the rule of Nohfelden. Until the French Revolution, the castle was the seat of a Zweibrücken bailiff. In 1490 the castle witnessed one of the saddest chapters in the history of Pfalz-Zweibrücken. After the death of Duke Ludwig the Black , his sons Kaspar and Alexander had ruled together for a year when Alexander had his older brother forcibly deposed. He was brought to Veldenz Castle and remained there - even after his brother's death - until his death in 1527.

In the many wars of the 17th century, the castle did not go unmolested, but was always maintained. Duke Friedrich died in 1661 at the castle . In 1804 the castle was declared a French national property and sold to the Cetto brothers from St. Wendel . Then the castle complex, which was used to procure building materials, fell into disrepair.

Today's owner of the castle ruins is the municipality of Nohfelden.

The Keep (1992)

The area of the castle complex, of which the round keep still visible from afar , extends over a length of 100 meters and is accessible from the east side via stairs. In 2005 the remains of the castle wall and the keep were completely renovated. An elevator was installed for barrier-free access, from which metal walkways lead to the castle courtyard and keep. The tower was given a new conical roof and reached a height of around 27 meters with this. It can be climbed as a viewing tower and offers a good view over Nohfelden and the Nahe valley from its 20 meter high viewing platform . The basement of the Palas has been accessible again since 1971. It was about 30 meters long and 12 meters wide. Today there are houses on the rest of the castle area.

Todays use

The castle tower is freely accessible from April to October. Guided tours can also be arranged by arrangement with the municipality's tourist office.

Weddings can be held at the castle on request, and in summer it is used for various events.
