Billy Wedlock

William "Billy" John Wedlock (born October 28, 1880 , † January 25, 1965 ) was an English football player .

Career

Wedlock played for Bristol City in 1900/01 and between 1905 and 1921 when he retired from his career. Here he was nicknamed "Fatty" or "India Rubber Man" by the followers because of his stature, but he made up for his physical inadequacies with his technical skills. Wedlock was called up to the English national team 26 times between 1907 and 1914 and had only one competitor in the fight for his position in Charlie Roberts of Manchester United .

His greatest successes in 1906 were the promotion of his club to the First Division , at the time the highest league in the country, and reaching the FA Cup final in 1909 against Manchester United , which was, however, scored 0: 1 by a goal from United striker Alex Turnbull. Defeat ended.
