Binsenwerder
Binsenwerder is a submerged island in the Lieps , a lake in the urban area of Neubrandenburg in the Mecklenburg Lake District . It was located in the southeastern area of the lake near Usadel .
The original size was around 3000 m². Archaeological finds indicate a settlement from pre-Slavic times to the 13th century. The island belonged with high probability to a Slavic settlement chamber around the Lieps and the southern part of the Tollensesees , even if a direct connection with the centers Bacherswall or Hanfwerder could not be proven archaeologically due to the lack of small finds . In the second half of the 13th century, the Tollense am Oberbach was dammed for the operation of the four-wheel mill . As a result, the water level of Tollensesee and Lieps rose by more than a meter. The island was completely flooded and had to be abandoned. Reeds settled there , and the name can be traced back to its incorrect designation as rushes .
From 1973 onwards, the Lieps was affected by the so-called reed dieback, in which the reed population in the lake decreased by around 90 percent. Until the summer of 1975 the island was free of reeds. This year an archaeological investigation of the area took place, during which numerous ceramic finds were recovered. With a lake level of around 40 cm below normal, around 4 m² protruded above the waterline in 1975. The remains of the island, exposed unprotected to the effects of the water, were soon removed by environmental influences, so that the location of the Binsenwerder can no longer be seen from land today.
