Four-wheel mill

The Vierrademühle is a former mill in Neubrandenburg at Treptower Tor in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The listed building complex at the location of the city's oldest mill now houses gastronomic and cultural facilities.

history

The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1271. The builder was Bernhard von Raven, a son of the city founder Herbord von Raven . For the watermill , the natural drainage of the Tollensee was closed and the lake was dammed by about 80 cm. The Oberbach was created as an 860 meter long canal and drove four undershot water wheels . The name Vierrademühle is derived from these four wheels.

In the following centuries the mill changed hands several times. In 1360 the new town mayor Hermann von Aschen took over the mill from the von Raven family. It then came into the possession of Duke Heinrich IV of Mecklenburg , who ceded it to the Broda Monastery on September 22, 1433 . Around 1600 it finally became the property of the city of Neubrandenburg and was leased by them.

During the Thirty Years War the tenants gave up the mill. During the siege and conquest of Neubrandenburg by the troops of Tilly , the mill outside the city walls was heavily fought over and destroyed because of the grain stores in it. When Neubrandenburg went bankrupt in 1664, the mill came into the possession of the Stargard office . The mill burned down several times in the 17th century, but was always rebuilt because of its importance. Between 1682 and 1684 the four undershot waterwheels were replaced by two overshot waterwheels. In 1705 the Moncke family bought the four-wheel mill. In the 18th century the mill developed into one of the largest mills in Mecklenburg.

In 1915 the mill was converted to turbine operation. From 1925 it was operated electrically. The owner Georg Moncke was expropriated in 1953 and the four-wheel mill became a state-owned company . After the reunification it was privatized and was named Nordland Mühlenwerke GmbH . Georg Moncke was able to purchase the mill again in 1993. Rye and wheat were ground in it until 1998, when the mill ended.

In 2001, Klaus-Detlef Schnoor acquired the mill property and had the historic building completely rebuilt. In compliance with the preservation of monuments , apartments, business and office space as well as gastronomic and cultural facilities were accommodated in the buildings. Since the spring of 2004, the regional museum has housed the permanent exhibition of the Neubrandenburg city history (s) on the upper floor .
