Mutnowski ( Russian Мутновский ; also Mutnowskaja Sopka , Мутновская сопка ) is a volcano that is located in the southern part of the Russian peninsula Kamchatka . It is one of the most active volcanoes on Kamchatka. The active Gorely volcano is only separated from Mutnowski by a valley .
geology
The Mutnowski volcano is characterized by four merging stratovolcanoes. The youngest volcanic cone Mutnowski IV was formed in the early Holocene . The volcanic activity in the Holocene was characterized by moderate phreatomagmatic eruptions . The Mutnowski crater has a diameter of up to 2 km and is partly glaciated . In its interior and on the outer slopes there are numerous fumaroles and some smaller geysers, which is why the area is also known as the Small Valley of Geysers ( Russian Малая долина гейзеров , based on the valley of the geysers further north ).
Geothermal power plant
At the foot of the volcano, around 1000 m above sea level, there is the Mutnowski geothermal power plant of the same name , which consists of two energy blocks , each with an output of 25 megawatts . In total, the Mutnowski power plant draws hot water from 17 boreholes. The "used" cold water is pumped back into the earth through six holes so that it can be heated again by the heat of the stratovolcano. The power plant supplies almost 30 percent of the electricity for Kamchatka and thus represents an important pillar in Kamchatka’s energy supply, as the energy prices are 50 to 100% above the Russian average due to the high transport costs.
"Volcano Dive"
The Russian extreme athlete and former skysurfing "world champion" Valeri Vladimirovich Rosow jumped out of a helicopter on April 18, 2009 in a wingsuit over the active volcano and landed on an ice surface in the crater.
