The BIOPETROL Industries AG is a group of energy industry based in Baar ( Switzerland ). It produces, trades and sells biodiesel and pharmaceutical glycerine on the national and international market. Biopetrol Industries is one of the largest biodiesel manufacturers in Europe as well as the largest producer of pharmaceutical glycerine in Europe and the second largest worldwide. Since the end of 2009 the company has been majority owned by the Swiss commodity trading group Glencore .

capacities

Biopetrol produces around 1,000,000 tons of biodiesel and 90,000 tons of pharmaceutical glycerine annually at its two locations in Rotterdam and Rostock .

Company history

The history of Biopetrol Industries AG began with the construction of the biodiesel plant in Schwarzheide in 2002, which was taken over by the Klink family of entrepreneurs in 2004. In 2005 the capacity of the factory was expanded and the company went public as a stock corporation. In 2006 the plant in Rostock was built and opened as the second production facility, and capacity was expanded there the following year. The plant in Rotterdam went into operation at the beginning of 2010, and in the same year the company took over another plant in Rotterdam, Dutch Biodiesel.

At the end of 2009, Glencore took over the majority of shares in Biopetrol Industries with a stake of 50 percent plus one share. The investment comes from the holdings of the Klink family, which previously held almost two thirds of the share capital. Biopetrol Industries shares have been listed on the Open Market of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since November 2005 .

Production in Schwarzheide was discontinued in 2011 . This was justified with the oversupply of biodiesel in the region and the lack of transport links between the plant and supra-regional markets. Zeppoil, part of the Czech chemical group Spolchemie, took over the plant in 2013. Production has started again, but the focus is on the production of glycerine, which is actually a by-product of biodiesel production, but can be produced in Schwarzheide in a very high purity.
