Bird & Bird is an international law firm with over 1100 employees in 28 locations worldwide. In Germany, the law firm is organized as a limited liability partnership under English law and has offices in Düsseldorf , Frankfurt , Munich and Hamburg . In the 2014/15 financial year, 163 professionals in Germany generated sales of around € 64 million.

history

The firm was founded in 1846 by Frederick Wratislaw Bird and James Moore in Gray's Inn under the name Bird & Moore . In 1853 the law firm moved to its long-term headquarters at 5 Gray's Inn Square in London, which was only given up in 1941 due to massive destruction by an air raid.

After Frederick Bird's death in 1884, his son William Barrott Montford Bird took over the firm and acquired clients from the mining and iron sectors. He founded one of the first companies to manufacture electric lightbulbs, the successor of which - now a household goods company - is still a client of the firm.

From 1905 onwards, when Ernest Edward Bird, cousin of William Bird, joined the firm, it was renamed Bird & Bird for the first time .

In 1943, Ernest Bird became president of the bar and left the firm. In 1950, William Bird died as the last family member in the firm.

From 1958 the firm merged with Richard Furber & Son Windsor & Brown and in 1967 with Ranken Ford & Chester .

In 1991 an international expansion began with the opening of an office in Brussels. The first German offices were opened in Düsseldorf in 2002, in Munich in 2003 and in Frankfurt am Main in 2005. An office in Hamburg followed in 2011.

In 2008 the merger with the law firm Lane & Partners and the conversion into an LLP under English law took place, as well as the entry into a community with Alban Tay Mahtani & de Silva LLP , one of the leading law firms in Singapore.

Office openings in the Middle East, Denmark and Australia followed. The 28th office opened in Luxembourg in January 2016.

From 2015, the firm hit the headlines when it was sued for a three-digit million amount in the wake of the Wölbern scandal and the Hamburg location was searched and arrests were made in 2016.
