Birgit Alkenings

Birgit Alkenings (born May 10, 1967 in Düsseldorf ) is a German local politician ( SPD ). She has been mayor of Hilden ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) since June 26, 2014 .

Education and professional career

After graduating from high school in 1986, Alkenings studied chemistry at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . In 1992, she graduated with a diploma in chemistry and was the center for Information and Media Technology at the University as a systems administrator employed. From January 2012 she was a team leader at Enterprise Resource Planning.

Political career

Alkenings has been a member of the SPD since 1988. For many years she was a member of the Hilden city council, parliamentary group leader and local group chairwoman of the SPD Hilden. In 2014 she won the runoff election for the mayor's office with 62.7% of the vote, ahead of her opponent Marion Buschmann ( CDU ). Since June 26, 2014 she has been the mayor of Hilden.

Alkenings announced in January 2019 that she would run again in 2020 and was confirmed as the SPD candidate for the 2020 mayoral election on May 9, 2020. At the end of 2019, the CDU, FDP, citizens' action and the Greens presented the common opponent Claus Pommer.

Activities as mayor:

  • The mayors of the 3 neighboring cities of Hilden, Langenfeld and Monheim have agreed with the "Education 3 " initiative to operate a joint education company from January 1, 2015 in order to provide young people with better and more targeted work.
  • There are over 20 emergency shelters in Hilden, in which around 700 refugees were housed at the beginning of 2019 without them being noticed in the cityscape. Alkenings anticipates that the reception of refugees from crisis areas will also be an issue in the future. We have succeeded in motivating many volunteers and supporting cooperation with aid organizations, associations, churches and the administration.
  • Despite falling income, a balanced budget was achieved in Hilden by 2019.
  • When redesigning public spaces and bus stops, attention was and is paid to ensure that they are barrier-free.
  • With the city cycling campaign, people in Hilden were motivated to make their contribution to climate protection and save 13 tons of CO 2 . With the same goal, 3 electric cars were purchased in the city administration.
  • The development of the industrial areas Bahnhofsallee and Kreuz Hilden was driven forward and numerous new jobs were created.
  • As part of the economic development program, a production facility for the Dutch high-tech company 247TailorSteel was successfully established in Hilden.

Life

Alkenings lives in Hilden with her partner and his son.
