Birgit Schönau

Birgit Schönau (* 1966 in Hamm ) is a German journalist and publicist .

Life

Schönau attended the Aldegrever high school in Soest . She then studied in Dortmund journalism and history . She completed a traineeship at the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and then worked as a reporter for Westdeutscher Rundfunk ( WDR ). In 1990 she went to Rome to complete her studies and worked in the dpa correspondent office . She has been the author of the Süddeutsche Zeitung since 1998 , mainly for the sports editorial team. From 2005 to 2014 Schönau was also Italy correspondent for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit . She published several books on Italian politics and sports, mainly football. Schönau is an appointed member of the German Academy for Football Culture and was a juror and laudator several times for the award of the German Football Culture Prize .
