The red beech or coin-shaped bark ball mushroom ( Biscogniauxia nummularia ), also known as the penny coal crust , is a wood-dwelling fungus on beech from the family of the wooden club relatives .

features

Biscogniauxia nummularia fruiting bodies

Macroscopic features

The European beech bark ball mushroom forms extensive flat, black, coal-like stroma exclusively on dead beeches . They can be round with 5–20 mm in diameter or irregularly ellipsoid with 15–50 (-120) mm in length and 10–22 (-60) mm in width with an average thickness of 0.6–0.8 mm. The tissue under the perithecia is inconspicuous. The perithecia themselves are hemispherical 0.4-0.6 mm wide and 0.5-0.7 mm high.

Microscopic features

The short-stalked asci have an amyloid apical ring. The ascospores are dark brown to black, elliptical and measure 10-13 x 7.5-8.5 µm.

Distribution and ecology

The red beech bark ball mushroom occurs in Europe from France and Germany to Russia and the Caucasus saprobion table on beech. Although the penny coal crust is generally described as a saprobiont on beech, it has been observed in southern Italy that it can also occur as a pathogen in beech .
