The assassination attempt on Chancellor Otto von Bismarck on July 13, 1874

The Bismarck Street is located in Bad Kissingen , the district town of the Lower Franconian district of Bad Kissingen and is home to several monuments of the town .

history

The street, which was originally called Saalestraße , represents the Saaletalstraße on the right bank of the Franconian Saale . In its southern section, the Bismarckstraße developed into the arterial road to Hammelburg . Due to a certain distance from the actual urban settlement as well as the free location over the course of the river, the street developed into a main axis of the spa district, which has been expanding since the Biedermeier period , since the first half of the 19th century . The largely one-sided development of Bismarckstrasse began in its northern section opposite the old town at the level of the Bad Kissinger rose garden between Schweizerhaussteg and Ludwigsbrücke with a gradual settlement of larger hotels such as the Fürstenhof (Bismarckstrasse 6).

In the southern section of Bismarckstrasse, with the Westendhaus (Bismarckstrasse 24) as the starting point, settled at a slow pace until the First World War , taking advantage of the favorable location on the hillside, curvillas and sanatoriums.

In the northern section of Bismarckstrasse ( Bismarckstrasse 16 ), the journeyman cooper Eduard Kullmann carried out an assassination attempt on Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in protest against his Kulturkampf . There is a memorial plaque made by the sculptor Michael Arnold in 1874 at the site of the attack .

When, after Bismarck's last spa stay in Hausen (today part of Bad Kissingen), it was foreseeable that the former Reich Chancellor would not continue to stay at a spa due to his poor health, the city council of Bad Kissingen decided on August 10, 1893 to rename Saalestrasse to Bismarckstrasse . As the local Saale newspaper reported on August 17, 1893, Mayor Theobald von Fuchs had called on Bismarck the day before. As Fuchs emphasized, the street deserves a name after Bismarck, in which the Chancellor was saved from great danger. Bismarck was delighted with the proposed honor and gave his consent to the renaming.
