history
At the representatives' day in Hamburg on December 3, 1898, the student body of the Herzoglich Technische Hochschule Carola-Wilhelmina in Braunschweig suggested that a monument be erected to Otto von Bismarck. A committee founded for this purpose voted unanimously on May 14, 1899 in favor of building a Bismarckian column based on the award-winning Götterdämmerung design by the architect Wilhelm Kreis on a building site in the Asse.
The foundation stone was laid on June 17, 1900 . The building material was shell limestone and dolomite , which were quarried on the Asse. The base plate and the tower head are made of white limestone. Yellow dolomite stone was used for the tower shaft. The inauguration of the Bismarck Tower was on October 18 or October 20, 1901. The construction costs were 100,000 marks .
After the Second World War , the Bismarck Tower became the property of the State of Lower Saxony . Only in 1977 was a contract with the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Asse e. V. closed, which regulates use, care and cleaning.
