Geographical location

Location of the bishopric

The bistal is crossed by the stream coming from the north and belongs to the communities of Escheburg and Kröppelshagen-Fahrendorf in roughly equal proportions .

The area is about five kilometers from the south-eastern border of Hamburg and is located between the Hamburg district of Bergedorf and the city of Geesthacht .

The Bistal is thus directly in the hamlet of Hamburg in the attractive landscape between Sachsenwald in the north and the Elbe in the south. It is part of the densely wooded Geest slope , which extends from Hamburg-Bergedorf via Börnsen and Escheburg to Geesthacht , which in prehistory represented the northern bank of the Elbe glacial valley and is consistently about 50 meters above the flat marsh .

geology

Bistal

The Bistal was formed around 15,000 to 80,000 years ago, similar to the nearby Dalbek Gorge nature reserve . At this time, namely the Vistula Ice Age, the glaciers from the north had come to a standstill in the area of today's Holstein . The water masses from the melting glaciers dug their way to the Elbe glacial valley deep into the earth. This created this 20 to 40 meter deep erosion gorge. The Bistal merges into a forest area in the north, which is the foothills of the community-free Sachsenwald.
