In 1845 goldsmith Leopold Bittmann founded the company “Leop. Bittmann ”in Idar-Oberstein . With the entry into the industrial production of accessories for the jewelry industry in 1870, he developed a process for the production of seamless and thin-walled hollow metal balls. In 1948 the product range was expanded to include coffee strainers, furniture fittings and accessories for the electrical and automotive industries.

The entry into storage technology took place in 1959 with the production of sheet steel boxes, small parts and shelving racks as well as lattice boxes. In 1962, the plastic production of shelf boxes started. After the name was changed to "BITO Lagertechnik Bittmann OHG" in 1975, the go-ahead was given in 1976 for the project business and the development of the flow rack for general cargo. The most important developments since 1980 are the modular shelving range, the pallet racking, the pallet flow racks and the "SK" and "RK" series of boxes.
