Bjørn Hansen (civil servant)

Bjørn Gårn Hansen (born June 20, 1963 in Birkerød ) is a Danish EU official .

Life

Hansen attended the Marie Kruse School in Farum , which he in 1981 with the Studentereksamen ( university graduated) with focus on mathematics and physics. From September 1981 he studied at the State University of New York , where in May 1985 he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree ( magna cum laude ) in applied mathematics , economics and pure mathematics and a Master of Science ( summa cum laude ) in applied mathematics . From October 1985 he was employed as a research assistant at the Technical University of Eindhoven , where he orally defended his dissertation in probability theory under the title Monotonicity properties of infinitely divisible distributions in December 1988 . As a result, Hansen was promoted to the Ph.D. awarded. This was followed by a postdoc at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in the same subject area.

From 1991 Hansen worked for the European Commission , first in the European Chemicals Bureau in Ispra , and from June 2003 in the General Environment Directorate in Brussels. From 2012 he worked there as a department head. During his time at the Directorate-General for the Environment, he was posted to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) as Director of Operations from 2007 to 2008 , where he was responsible for the development of REACH . He was also involved in the development of the CLP regulation . He was also chairman of the Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials of the OECD and of several contact groups at joint conferences of the parties to the Basel , Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions .

In January 2018, Hansen succeeded Geert Dancet as Director of ECHA.
