Blaže Koneski [ ˈbɫaʒɛ ˈkɔnɛski ] ( Macedonian Блаже Конески; born December 19, 1921 in Nebregovo near Prilep ; † December 7, 1993 in Skopje ) was a Macedonian writer and philologist .

Life

Koneski attended schools in Prilep and Kragujevac and studied Slavic Studies in Belgrade and Sofia . After the Second World War he worked at the Macedonian National Theater and in 1946 became a professor at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Skopje ; 1958-1960 he was also rector of the university. He was a member of the Macedonian Academy of Science and Art and its first president from 1967 to 1975. He was also a member of the Academies of Zagreb , Belgrade, Sarajevo , Chicago and Łódź . Koneski published the literary magazines Nov den and Makedonski jazik . He was a member of the Macedonian PEN and the Macedonian Writers' Association since 1947 and their first president. He has received numerous prizes for his literary and scientific work, including the Herder Prize in 1971.

Works

Koneski's greatest importance lies in the codification of the Macedonian language , which was officially approved as the state and literary language in 1945. As a philologist, Koneski edited a two-volume grammar of the Macedonian language and a dictionary. He also wrote a history of Macedonian literature. As a translator, he transferred a. a. Shakespeare, Heine (1952) and Mickiewicz into Macedonian. In literary terms, Koneski was particularly important as a poet. But he also wrote stories.

Afterlife

The Faculty of Philology at the University of Skopje is named after Koneski, who is much honored in Macedonia . In 2005, his birthplace in Nebregovo was renovated and turned into a memorial and museum for the writer. The Macedonian Academy of Sciences has named its highest honor after him.
