Black Boned Angel was a New Zealand drone doom project.

history

Kneale, here at an appearance of his Birchville Cat Motel 2009 project in Berlin, is considered to be the head of the Black Boned Angel project

Campbell Kneale founded Black Boned Angel in the early 2000s and named the project after a piece by the group Godflesh . Since Kneale also operated the independent label Battlecruiser and Celebrate Psi Phenomena, the project released several albums through Kneale's own companies. For other publications, especially EPs , the project cooperated with other independent labels such as 20 Buck Spin , Riot Season or Sound Devastation Records .

Compared to projects like Nadja , with which Black Boned Angel released two split EPs, Earth , Boris or Sunn O))) Black Boned Angel gained less prominence. The group achieved this internationally primarily through the two collaborations with Nadja. In discussions of the overall genre, the group's musical approach was nevertheless praised as being significant and innovative for Drone Doom. Reviews of individual releases highlighted the albums Verdun and The Endless Coming Into Life as the darkest albums of the genre.

In 2012, Kneale announced that he would not continue Black Boned Angel. The album The End , released in 2013 via Handmade Birds , was to remain the band's last. Kneale justified his decision with wanting to part with the "great, crushing sadness" conveyed in the publications. He describes the phase as "a time and a place full of [...] terrible ghosts", which he strives to leave behind. The End was widely received as the end of the career and was positively assessed by reviewers, often representing the entire work of Black Boned Angel.

style

Most of the music played by Black Boned Angel is attributed to Drone Doom and Dark Ambient . According to NME and The Wire editor Louis Pattison, the line between Dark Ambient and Drone Done is blurred in the music of the New Zealand project. Occasionally, other stylistic terms such as experimental , doom metal and noise are added. Comparisons with Godflesh, Sunn O))), Earth, Khanate , Jesu and Corrupted are also used to locate the music.

According to the genre, guitar playing is described as " riffs that seem to drag on forever". The slow drums are mixed into the background with a reverb effect . This creates an "inexorable monotony" between "gloomy ambient sounds [...], sluggish Doom riffs" and the "minimalist drums". The incorporated sampling meanwhile supports the perceived as gloomy and depressing atmosphere.
