Corrupted is a Japanese metal band, which is mostly assigned to the subgenre Doom Metal , and occasionally also to Sludge . The band was founded in 1994 and has since released six albums and over twenty singles, EPs and splits .

Corrupted have always shown themselves to be very cautious towards the media, they neither give interviews nor exist press photos. Also, despite international fame, they rarely played outside of Japan. Regardless of this, they have earned a status as an influential cult band within the Doom Metal scene, they are considered to be one of the most extreme representatives of the genre. Musically unusual is the length of the pieces and the integration of calm ambient passages.

history

Corrupted were founded in 1994 in Osaka . In 1995 the band released three first EPs , followed by several contributions to compilations and splits with Black Army Jacket , Grief and Noothgrush , since then Corrupted has mostly released singles, EPs and splits, but also four albums.

Her album debut was released in 1997 with Paso inferior , a total of around 30 minutes and containing only one track on each side of the (vinyl) release, on the first side extremely slow Doom Metal, on side two an ambient title.

In 1999 the band released their second album , the double CD Llenandose de gusanos with three tracks and a playing time of more than 2 hours. Here, too, you can find the typical mixture of extreme metal and ambient. In the same year, the band's shortest track to date, Reset , with a playing time of 1:44 minutes , was released on a French benefit compilation to support the homeless .

In 2000 Corrupted played for the first time in Europe, but for a long time only appeared in Japan, mostly in the Osaka area. A split release was last released in 2002 and the band has since reduced the frequency of their releases significantly. Only in 2004 did they go public again with their third album, Se hace por los suenos asesinos , which was followed a year later by the fourth album El mundo frio . The latter album consisted of a single, over 70 minutes long song, which was for the most part an ambient piece and contained significantly less metal parts than other releases. In 2007 only two singles appeared again, Vasana and An Island Insane , except for a few re-releases for four years, their last releases so far.

For the film Junk Films: The Collected Short Shockumentaries of Tsurisaki Kiyotaka ( jap. ジ ャ ン ク フ ィ ル ム / 釣 崎 清 隆 残酷 短 編 集 , Janku Firumu / Tsurisaki Kiyotaka Zankoku Tanpenshūiyaki ), they worked with the director and photographer Kiyotaka in 2007 . The central theme of his work is the corpses of people who died an unnatural death. Corrupted provided the soundtrack for the film and played live at the Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival and the “Festival In Famous Carousel” in Paris in October 2008 . This was the first time the band had toured abroad since 2000. In November she toured along the west coast of the USA , and in July 2009 she gave two concerts in Great Britain, including at the Supersonic Festival .

In July 2010 there was news in numerous metal forums and blogs around the world that singer Hevi had left the band and made this public on his Facebook account. After that, Corrupted only played a few gigs, including a short tour in October of that year in the USA.

As later became known, the guitarist Talbot had left the band with Hevi, the band had to be reconstituted after the departure of two band members. On August 20, the album Garden of Unconsciousness was released , which had been recorded in the course of 2010 with the old line-up. From August 2011 Corrupted gave concerts again, but since then only played once or twice a year, mostly in Osaka. On February 23, 2015, Corrupted announced that they had started recording a new single, the announcement was accompanied for the first time by a picture of the band. "Loss" was released on March 27, 2015, Mother Sii acted as the singer, but she did not stay, the position remained vacant. Chew as the head of the band has since been active as part of his own project under the name begottened . In March 2016 Corrupted toured Japan with Noothgrush . In February 2018 the album Felicific Algorithim was released , exclusively on vinyl, as a variable speed LP , i.e. playable at any speed.

music

For a long time a classic rock line-up (vocals, guitar, bass, drums) was used for the metal pieces of the band, later it was expanded to include keyboards . Characteristic are the extremely deeply tuned guitars and slow, minimalistic bass riffs with lots of feedback . The singing is a deep growling , the lyrics are mainly in Spanish , only occasionally Japanese or English lyrics are found. Instrumental and vocal passages often alternate in long pieces. Ambient pieces or passages also include atypical instruments such as acoustic guitar , piano , slide guitar and harp . The musical contrast between the harsh Doom sections and ambient passages is clearly pronounced, so the second track of the second album Llenándose de gusanos , Humanos , which with a length of almost 74 minutes clearly forms the center of the album, was “completely instrumental and completely devoid of Aggressiveness ” .

The band is strongly connected to grindcore . Grindcore bands are almost always found in compilations and split releases, only rarely sludge or doom metal bands as counterparts (for example in splits with Enemy Soil , Scarver's Calling , Phobia , Meat Slave , Machetazo , Sloth, Discordance Axis , 324 , Infaust and Cripple Bastards ), at concerts the band also often appears with them in the same line-up. In honor of Tottsuan, the singer of the grindcore band SOB , who had committed suicide , the band played the 100-minute piece Llenándose de gusanos live.

Although the band is at home in metal, they also have loose references to avant-garde and experimental music. The band's drummer, Chew Hasegawa, played at times with the noise rock band Boredoms , in Lausanne the band played in 2008 after Russell Haswell and Florian Hecker , in 2009 at the Supersonic Festival in Birmingham, in 2010 in Fukuoka behind Lasse Marhaug .

aesthetics

The covers of Corrupted releases make use of some recurring elements. The logo is simple and consists of the band name in white, very rarely black texture , decorative elements are completely missing. The background of the covers is usually black, with black and white photographs as the motif . Single and split releases often made use of documentary photos of human corpses, war or poverty.

The design of a re-release of the early EP Nadie in 2008 was done by Japanese photographer and director Kiyotaka Tsurisaki , with whom Corrupted had recently collaborated on his film.

The design of the albums is also based on an aesthetic dominated by black-and-white photographs, but they are much less explicit and the motifs are almost abstract. Arne Ebner sees similarities to the work of modern artists such as Gerhard Richter , Nobuyoshi Araki , Geneviève in his work on the aesthetics of Doom in the cover design of El mundo frio , which is based on a high-contrast, blurred photo of the noise rock musician Masahiko Ōno Cadieux and Uta Barth , but also to Robert Capa's famous landing photo in Normandy.

public relation

Corrupted hardly do any public relations work. Beyond announcements about new publications or concerts, they never gave interviews or published statements, and there are no press photos either. As a reason, Corrupted cite on their website that everything that can be said about the band can be found “in the music, the lyrics and the design of the records”, but they do not have a specifically media-critical attitude and state that they “do not use the media generally reject ”and appreciate all those who“ support them with fanzines , labels, distributors and in the planning of events ”.

reception

The albums received special attention because of their large amount of ambient and their profile differs significantly from the more metal-oriented split releases, EPs, singles and sampler contributions.

Berkay Erkan of Diabolical Conquest called the band's debut, Paso Inferior from 1997, a “masterpiece”, a “hypnotic and booming Doom record” shortly after the re-release in 2008/2009, and summed up: “This release has the standard for all to come Doom set. ”The British magazine Terrorizer put the album at number 17 in its list of“ 20 essential sludge albums ”in 2009 and said the band, despite their self-isolation, had“ immeasurable influence on dozens of heavy disciples across all genres ”.

Ian Christe wrote in 2000 in a review of the second album Llenandose de gusanos for CMJ New Music Monthly : " Swans and Melvins - goodbye , a new standard for the utmost challenge of our scurrying, fleeting society has been set". In his standard work Sound of the Beast: The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal from 2004, he leads the album under the title Slow Rides in a list of fourteen canonical works of Doom Metal.

Diabolical Conquest took both the third album Se hace por los suenos asesinos from 2004 and the album from 2005, El mundo frio , in its list of the "best metal albums of the decade 2000-2009". Se hace por los suenos asesinos was attested here that it remains “as one of the very few albums of its kind that not only leaves a lasting impression on the listener, but also gains durability over time”, in view of El mundo frio it is even said : "Corrupted not only represent a revolution in Doom Metal, but with albums like El Mundo Frio they are undeniably an essential part of Metal as a whole".

El mundo frio received special attention in the criticism. Global Domination spoke of Corrupted as "one of the best Doom Metal bands on earth, oh hell, they are the BEST". They describe the album, which consists of only one 72-minute piece, as a "composition [...] that is a suite-like masterpiece in terms of making music, orchestration, its dynamics and development" and drew comparisons with post-rock bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Explosions in the Sky , however, in contrast to them, attest Corrupted an "iron control over the development and dynamics of the piece"; the criticism resulted in the awarding of the highest grade of 10 points. Christopher Karlas from the Metal Observer also sees analogies to post rock, he states: “Incredibly powerful, lively and adventurous music, where I can't help but highly recommend it.” And awards 9.5 out of 10 possible points. Andy Beta from SF Weekly sees bands like Melvins and Earth as related, Eduardo Rivadavia from allmusic, on the other hand, is less than convinced by the album, awards only 2.5 out of 5 possible points and recommends the band that it might be "better served by." To refrain from preparations the length of the album ”.

Corrupted was also able to convince the critics live. On the occasion of a concert in Great Britain in 2009 Richard Fontenoy wrote in freqzine : “The sheer energy that Corrupted unleash - when and when they see fit, because they have nothing less than complete control over their corrupted sound - is outrageous and they live on the Experiencing the stage is a real eye and ear opener. " The band's appearance at the Supersonic Festival shortly before that was hailed by Rock-A-Rolla as “nothing less than an elemental and majestic display of environmental control and destructive power that brings the real power of Doom in a once-in-your-life - channeled live spectacles that no one who was there will ever forget. ".

The French drone-doom band Monarch! lists Corrupted as one of their influences, as well as the Japanese doom band Coffins and the US drone doom band Bloody Panda . In 2008 , the French director Gisèle Vienne staged JERK , a puppet show about the serial killer Dean Corll , the music for the piece was from Peter Rehberg and from the Corrupted album El mundo frio .
