Noothgrush is a sludge band founded in San José in 1994 .

history

The bassist and singer Gary Niederhoff and the drummer Chiyo Nukaga founded Noothgrush in 1994. The band name goes back to the character of the same name from the children's book There's a Wocket in My Pocket by Theodor Seuss Geisel . Soon after its inception, guitarist Tom Choi from Asbestosdeath and bassist Luis Davila joined the group. Both left the band after a few months and first attempts to compose music together. Exhumed's Matt Harvey joined as the new guitarist and additional vocalist , while Al Ruel also joined Noothgrush as vocalist and guitarist. With this new line-up, the band's familiar sound was consolidated. Earlier, more experimental ideas were dropped in favor of a more EyeHateGod , Melvins , Grief , Cattlepress and Corrupted sound.

In the meantime, the band recorded several demos and sold them during their performances. The label owner Chris Dodge, who was friends with Nukaga, offered the band in 1996 to produce an EP for his company Slap A Ham Records . The group agreed and after the release of the EP Embraced by the Anti Self received offers from different labels and bands to split releases. Until their self-published debut album Erode the Person from 1999, collaborations with Deadbodieseverywhere , Agents of Satan , Black Army Jacket , Corrupted , Sloth and Gasp arose . Nukaga described this publishing practice as a natural process that did not follow any predetermined concept. The publications were designed on the basis of the personal relationships with the participating bands and the respective companies. However, the do-it-yourself idea was also important.

Harvey left the group in 1996. For the time being, Niederhoff took on the task of guitarist and Ruel switched to bass. However, Ruel soon left the band and Niederhoff returned to playing the bass. Guest musicians were initially used as guitarists for live performances and studio activities. In 1999 Russ Kent took over from Alaric as guitarist.

After international tours, including a Japan tour with Corrupted, as well as further publications, the band broke up in 2001. At the end of the group the split EP Twin Threat to Your Sanity with Bongzilla , Corrupted and Dystopia as well as the retrospective Failing Early, Failing Often , which contained many of the pieces presented on the split releases, was released. The members separated amicably due to the rigors of their previous recording and tour activities, but without directly discussing the separation.

In 2006 Throne Records officially released the debut album Erode the Person . Five years later, Parasitic Records , Southern Lord , Fuck Yoga Records and Emetic Records tried to reissue old Noothgrush releases. Fuck Yoga Records released the compilation Noothgrush , Southern Lord released the live album Live for Nothing , Parasitic Records released a new edition of the album Erode The Person and Emetic Records released a new edition of the compilation Failing Early, Failing Often . To support the release of the albums, Nukaga and Niederhoff decided to reform the band. Dino Sommese from Dystopia was the new singer.

style

Noothgrush's music is attributed to the sludge. Ollie Fröhlich from Ox-Fanzine puts the music in the tradition of the popular sludge bands Grief and Dystopia. The sound corresponding to the band is characterized by heavy and monotonous riffing as well as "a [r] morbid [n] atmosphere, coupled with boundless hatred and despair". The bass playing is played in a low mood and performed in a strongly distorted manner, while the guitar playing is pervaded by recurring feedback. Playing the drums is considered to be particularly organic and uses so-called tribal rhythms . In addition, there is an increased use of film, noise and speech samples , which are used in many pieces of the group. The singing is compared to the guttural screaming and yelling of Mike Williams at EyeHateGod.
