The 1946  m high mountain is the highest point in the northernmost mountain range of the Chigmit Mountains. Below the southeast flank of Black Peak, the North Fork Big River flows in a northeastern direction. The west, north-east and south-east flanks of the mountain are glaciated . The next highest mountain is Double Peak, 16.3 km south-southwest . Geological surveys suggest that Black Peak is not of volcanic origin.
