The Black Sand Beach is one with volcanic ash interspersed sand beach at Cape Royds on the Antarctic Ross Island . It is the location of the Old Penguin Rookery .
It was discovered by participants in the Nimrod expedition (1907-1909) under the direction of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton at a distance of around one kilometer from the base camp of the expedition. The beach is officially included in the directory of the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names as a geographical object with the identification number 1476.
