Blair Castle

Blair Castle is a villa near the Scottish town of Culross in the Council Area Fife . In 1972 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

At the site of Blair Castle there was an older fortification of the same name, which was demolished around 1830. Blair Castle was built at an unspecified date between 1800 and 1830. The planning architect is not passed down. Due to the striking stylistic parallels to the architecture of the Scottish architect Robert Adam , who died in 1792 , it is assumed that it was either a student of Adam or that a design by Adam that was not realized earlier was carried out. Around 1927 Blair Castle was redesigned and possibly expanded slightly. It then served as the National Coal Board's welfare home .

description

Blair Castle is isolated on the north bank of the Firth of Forth about 1.5 km west of Culross. The three-storey villa is designed in a late classical style. Its south-facing main facade is three axes wide. The gray sandstone masonry is rusticated on the ground floor . Belt cornices structure the south-facing main facade horizontally. On Mittelrisaliten is the Doric entrance. Triple windows are let in on the first floor in a segmental arch recess. Paired colossal Ionic pilasters flank the windows. They have a frieze with a triangular gable at the end . Like the four north wings and the more complex, flatter east wing, the Corps de Logis closes with a flat, slate-covered hip roof .
