The Blanfordlerche ( Calandrella blanfordi ) is a kind from the family of larks. Its body proportions correspond to the short-toed lark found in southern Europe , but it is somewhat smaller. Their distribution area is in the east of Africa and on the Arabian Peninsula. There are three subspecies.
The name honors the British zoologist William Thomas Blanford
features
The Blanford Lark reaches a body length of about 12 to 13 centimeters, of which 4.9 to 5.2 centimeters are on the tail. It is one of the smallest larks. The beak measures approx. 9 to 10 millimeters from the skull. There is no gender dimorphism .
The Blanfordlerche resembles occurring further south of Africa in appearance Rotscheitellerche , but is somewhat brighter. Like this, it has a reddish-brown headstock, which is less pronounced than that of the red log. The top of the body is brown, the individual feathers are lined with a wide sand color. The forehead is a little lighter and more dull in color than the red-brown parting, the ear covers are light brown. There is an indistinct and small black-brown stain on the sides of the neck. The goiter, the flanks and the thighs are yellow-brown, the rest of the underside of the body is whitish.
Distribution area and habitat
The distribution area of the Blanford Lark is the north of Ethiopia, the north of Somalia and the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula. In Ethiopia it occurs in the highlands. It is a resident bird in its entire range . Their habitat are stony semi-deserts.
Way of life
The way of life has not yet been conclusively investigated. Presumably, the Blanford lark shows similar behavior as the red log.
Subspecies
There are three subspecies:
- C. b. eremica - ( Reichenow & Peters, JL , 1932) : Originally described as a separate species of the genus Spizocorys . Occurs in the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula.
- C. b. blanfordi - ( Shelley , 1902) : nominate form , occurs in northern Eritrea.
- C. b. daaroodensis - White, CMN , 1960 : Found in northern Somalia.
