Blarinella quadraticauda is a species of shrew from the genus Asian short-tailed shrews ( Blarinella ). It occurs in a limited part of the People's Republic of China .

features

With a head-torso length of 6.5 to 8.1 centimeters, the species is one of the medium-sized shrew species and is also the largest species in the genus. The tail reaches a length of 40 to 60 millimeters and the rear foot 13 to 16 millimeters; As with all species of the genus, the tail is very short, but longer than that of other Blarinella species. The species corresponds to Blarinella griselda in its appearance , but is slightly larger. The back and belly color is uniformly dark brown without gray-brown tints, whereby the belly side, the top of the feet and the tail are just as dark or even a little darker.

Tooth formula of the short-tailed shrews

The skull has a maximum length of 20 to 22 millimeters. Like all species of the genus has the type in the maxilla per half an incisor (incisor) and then five unicuspid teeth, a Vorbackenzahn (premolar) and three molars (molar). In the lower jaw, however, it has a single canine behind the incisor. The animals have a total of 32 teeth.

distribution

Distribution areas of Blarinella quadraticauda

Blarinella quadraticauda occurs only in a limited part of the People's Republic of China in the Sichuan province at altitudes of 1500 to 3000 meters.

Way of life

As with all species of the genus, hardly any data is available on the way of life of this species. Like all shrews, these species also feed on insects. The species lives mainly in coniferous forest areas at altitudes between 1500 and 3000 meters near rivers, but can also be found in secondary forests away from rivers.

Systematics

Blarinella quadraticauda is classified as a separate species within the genus of the Asian short-tailed shrew ( Blarinella ), which consists of three species. The first scientific description comes from Henri Milne-Edwards from 1872. At times both Blarinella griselda and Blarinella wardi , the other two species of the genus, Blarinella quadraticauda, were added as subspecies.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Threat and protection

The species is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) due to its relatively small distribution area and the threat to population size from habitat changes in the warning list ("near threatened"), whereby it is close to a listing as a threatened species . The species is primarily endangered by the deforestation of forest areas in its range and the conversion into agricultural areas and settlement areas.
