Blarinella wardi is a species of shrew from the genus of the Asian short-tailed shrew ( Blarinella ). It occurs in the southwestern part of the People's Republic of China and in Myanmar .

features

With a head-trunk length of 6.0 to 6.9 centimeters, the species is one of the small to medium-sized shrew species and is also the smallest species in the genus. The tail reaches a length of 32 to 43 millimeters and the hind foot from 10 to 13 millimeters; as with all species of the genus, the tail is very short. The species almost completely corresponds in appearance to Blarinella griselda and Blarinella quadraticauda , but is slightly smaller than Blarinella griselda . The back and abdomen are uniformly dark brown and gray, with the abdomen being significantly lighter and more gray. The top of the feet is gray-whitish to white and therefore lighter than in the other two species.

The skull has a maximum length of 18 to 20 millimeters. It is significantly narrower than that of the other species in the genus with a maximum width of less than 9 millimeters. Like all species of the genus has Blarinella wardi maxillary per half an incisor (incisor) and then five unicuspid teeth, a Vorbackenzahn (premolar) and three molars (molar). In the lower jaw, however, it has a single canine behind the incisor. The animals have a total of 32 teeth.

distribution

Distribution area (brown) of Blarinella wardi

Blarinella wardi occurs only in a limited part in the southwest of the People's Republic of China and in neighboring Myanmar . In China, the occurrence is limited to the province of Yunnan and perhaps the extreme southwest of Sichuan

The species lives in China at altitudes between 1600 and 3000 meters and also in Myanmar it occurs up to an altitude of 2400 meters.

Way of life

As with all species of the genus, hardly any data is available on the way of life of this species. Like all shrews, these species also feed on insects. Blarinella wardi lives mainly in wooded areas at higher elevations, including clearings and forest edges. It looks for its food on the ground in the cool and dense surface of the forest floor.

Systematics

Blarinella wardi is classified as an independent species within the genus of the Asian short-tailed shrew ( Blarinella ), which consists of three species. The first scientific description comes from Oldfield Thomas from 1915. At times, both Blarinella griselda and Blarinella wardi of the species Blarinella quadraticauda were assigned as subspecies.

Apart from the nominate form, no subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Threat and protection

Blarinella wardi is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as not endangered (“least concern”) due to its relatively large distribution area and the assumed size of the population. The main threats to the species come from the deforestation of forests and the transformation into agricultural areas and settlement areas.
