The subfamily of the bellows fish (Macroramphosinae) belongs to the snipe fish (Centriscidae) within the order of the pipefish (Syngnathiformes). It consists of three genera with a total of eight species .

distribution

The animals live worldwide in temperate and subtropical seas, sometimes at depths of up to 1000 meters. The genera Centriscops and Notopogon occur only in the southern hemisphere. The common snipe fish ( Macroramphosus scolopax ) also lives on the coasts of Western Europe and in the Mediterranean .

features

They are oval, laterally strongly flattened, partly high-backed fish, the body shape of which is reminiscent of a bellows . All species are toothless and have a tubular pipette nozzle. The second of the total of four to eight fin rays of the first dorsal fin forms a large spine that is sawn at the rear edge. The second dorsal fin is supported by 11 to 19 soft rays. The gill openings are wide. A lateral line organ may be present or absent. Bellows fish are 17 to 34 cm long. The very small pelvic fins are arranged in the middle on the underside of the body.
