Blastodacna is a genus of butterflies fromthe grass leaf miner family (Elachistidae).

features

The head of the butterfly is seamlessly scaled . The antennae are 4/5 as long as the forewings or only slightly shorter than the forewings. The labial palps are elongated. The third segment is curved upwards, the second segment is clearly thickened on the lower side by large protruding scales. The fore wings are lanceolate and have two large clusters of protruding scales. The hind wings are only half as wide as the forewings. They are narrowly lanceolate and tapered to a point.

In the males, the uncus is very small and bumpy. The gnathos with paired arms is very short and only reaches about half the length of the tegumen. The arms end in a bulge-shaped appendage which is covered with rows of spines. The tegumen is large and long and tapers distally . The valves are long and narrow, wider in the distal half and extend beyond the tegumen. The annellus lobes are large and sclerotized and slightly shorter than the tegumen. The vinculum is quite wide and has a short triangular saccus. The aedeagus is long and strong and slightly curved in the middle. The vesica is provided with rows of spines.

In females, the apophyses are about the same length and widened at the tip. The ostium is enclosed by a sclerotized genital plate, which laterally has triangular, conical or ribbon-shaped protuberances. The antrum is moderately wide and long and more or less sclerotized. This is followed by a pear-shaped, wrinkled section with the opening of the seminal duct. The corpus bursae is oval or egg-shaped, on it there is either a single sign in the form of an indentation with a fuzzy border or the sign is missing.

distribution

The representatives of the genus Blastodacna are native to the Holarctic . Most species are found in the Palearctic .

biology

The caterpillars live in twigs, plant galls and the berries of lignified rose plants (Rosaceae). Some species are plant pests on fruit trees.

Systematics

In Europe the genus is represented by four species. In Transcaucasia , Asia Minor and the Middle East two species are added. The type species of the genus is Alucita hellerella .

The following synonyms are known from the literature:

  • Sintinea Yang , 1977

The genus Blastodacna can be divided into two homogeneous groups of species. B. atra , B. hellerella and B. rossica belong to the first group . It is characterized by the high-contrast drawing on the long, narrow front wings, the long, bent back arms of the gnathos with small bump-shaped appendages on the genitals of the males and the large genital plate surrounding the ostium on the genitals of the females. The second group includes the species B. vinolentella and B. georgiella . In this group, the forewings are shorter and wider and more homogeneously colored. In the genitals of the males, the arms of the Gnathos are very short, they have large bump-shaped appendages. In females, the genital plate is reduced in the shape of a saddle. The two groups of species can probably be regarded as sub-genera.
