The Blau brand (formerly owned by Blau Mobilfunk GmbH) is a mobile communications brand of Telefónica Deutschland Holding AG , which u. a. Offers prepaid tariffs and tariffs with a term for mobile telecommunications. All Blau tariffs use the Telefónica Deutschland network. Blau Mobilfunk, which held the trademark rights of the Blau brand until the takeover in 2015, was founded in 2005 as an independent GmbH based in Hamburg. Until the takeover by Telefónica in 2015, the core business of the “Blau” brand was the marketing of prepaid products. As a mobile communications provider, Blau Mobilfunk used the network infrastructure of E-Plus and did not have its own branches. The SIM cards were sold online, at various German retailers and in E-Plus's own base shops.

history

The company was founded in 2005 by the three entrepreneurs Martin Ostermayer, Thorsten Rehling and Dirk Freise, who previously operated the website handy.de and later sold it to Bertelsmann . A contract for the marketing of mobile communications services with E-Plus created the prerequisites for founding Blau Mobilfunk GmbH as the first independent mobile communications discounter. In September 2005 the discount tariff "blau.de" was launched; In January 2006 the tariff for international calls “Blauworld” was added.

In November 2006, Blau Mobilfunk took over the discounter provider debitel-light. In return, Debitel received a minority stake in Blau Mobilfunk GmbH. In 2007 "blau.de" already had around 600,000 customers.

In 2007 the company entered into branded reseller partnerships for the first time (including Plus, now Netto), which helped the company to achieve a strong growth spurt.

In April 2008, Blau Mobilfunk was taken over by the Dutch E-Plus parent company KPN . The core brands "blau.de" and "Blauworld" were retained.

In 2012, in addition to the normal prepaid cards, an allnet flat rate based on Yourfone was brought onto the market. Blau was no longer just a pure prepaid discounter, but also offered mobile phone tariffs on account.

As of January 1, 2013, Blau Mobilfunk belonged to E-Plus due to changes in the group structure and was now a direct subsidiary.

In August 2013, the management of the Hamburg mobile communications discounter announced that it would extend the standard tariff in the prepaid area to include calls to and from other EU countries. With this, Blau Mobilfunk eliminated the Europe-wide roaming charges for telephone calls and from then on enabled calls from Germany to other EU countries and from other EU countries to Germany at a single price. In addition to the 28 countries of the European Union, this tariff also applies to the non-EU country Switzerland.

In September 2013, the “Blauworld” brand was transferred to Ortel Mobile GmbH as part of a restructuring of the ethnic brands . In April 2014 the brand “blau.de” was renamed “Blau”.

By the end of 2015, Blau Mobilfunk GmbH employed more than 100 people in the areas of IT, product management, marketing, sales, finance and customer service. At the end of June 2015, Telefónica announced that all customers would be migrated to Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG on July 1, 2015 and that blue would be retained as a brand. Blau Mobilfunk GmbH was merged with Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG.
