The Blue Annals are one of the most famous and important works of traditional Tibetan historiography.

Structure and content

The work consists of 15 chapters and 102 sections and primarily depicts the spread of Buddhism in Tibet from the 11th to the 15th centuries.

history

The author Gö Lotsawa (1392–1481) completed the work in 1476. The first block print was made in the early 1480s.

The English translation made by the Soviet sinologist Ju. N. Rjorich with the help of the Tibetan scholar Gendün Chöpel was a sensation for western Tibetology and is still a classic today.

The Chinese translation by Guo Heqing was probably created in 1985 without the help of the English version by Rjorich.
